چکیده

Several sophisticated methods are available for efficient rendering of out-of-core terrain data sets. For huge data sets the use of preprocessed tiles has proven to be more efficient than continuous levels of detail, since in the latter case the screen space error has to be verified for individual triangles. There are some prevailing problems of these approaches: i) the partitioning and simplification of the original data set and ii) the accurate rendering of these data sets. Current approaches still trade the approximation error in image space for increased frame rates. To overcome these problems we propose a data structure and LOD scheme. These enable the real-time rendering of out-of-core data sets while guaranteeing geometric and texture accuracy of one pixel between original and rendered mesh in image space. To accomplish this, we utilize novel scalable techniques for integrated simplification, compression, and rendering. The combination of these techniques with impostors and occlusion culling yields a truly output sensitive algorithm for terrain data sets. We demonstrate the potential of our approach by presenting results for several terrain data sets with sizes up to 16k x 16k. The results show the unprecedented fidelity of the visualization, which is maintained even during real-time exploration of the data sets.

Fast Rendering of Massive Textured Terrain Data

Rendering of textured terrain models has become a widely used technique in the field of GIS applications and virtual reality. In this paper, we propose a framework based on tile-pyramid model and linear quadtree tile-index, which enable the real-time rendering of out-of-core terrain data sets while guaranteeing geometric and texture accuracy. The digital elevation model tile pyramid and the ort...

Interactive Editing of GigaSample Terrain Fields

Previous terrain rendering approaches have addressed the aspect of data compression and fast decoding for rendering, but applications where the terrain is repeatedly modified and needs to be buffered on disk have not been considered so far. Such applications require both decoding and encoding to be faster than disk transfer. We present a novel approach for editing gigasample terrain fields at i...

Efficient Geometry Compression for GPU-based Decoding in Realtime Terrain Rendering

We present a geometry compression scheme for restricted quadtree meshes and use this scheme for the compression of adaptively triangulated digital elevation models (DEMs). A compression factor of 8-9 is achieved by employing a generalized strip representation of quadtree meshes to incrementally encode vertex positions. In combination with adaptive error-controlled triangulation this allows us t...

Enhancing Textured Digital Elevation Models Using Photographs

We present a method for enhancing the visual quality of existing digital elevation models textured with orthophotos, using a sparse set of unordered, high resolution photographs. After an initial manual selection of correspondence points, we automatically register the input photographs to the given terrain data set using robust imagebased modeling techniques. To combine the geo-registered image...

A Design Overview of a Real-time Terrain Rendering Program

In this report, we provide an overview of the design of a real-time 3D terrain rendering program being developed for educational use. The terrain rendering program has four main viewing stages ranging from solar orbit to low altitude y-by. Each stage has diierent viewing characteristics and data requirements. Hence, diierent rendering techniques , such as pixel mapping and bump mapping, are use...
